Conversations with BRJA are informative, participatory events that support organizations starting their journey, looking for “continuing education,” or supplementing ongoing racial inclusion work. Session are open to all.

Grounding in ARAO for White People is designed for white people seeking an introduction to anti-racism/anti-oppression analysis leading towards the “everyday” anti-racism/anti-oppression work that leads to transformative change. Participants will practice having honest conversations about race and racism, reflect on their own white racial identity, and explore the historical development and contemporary manifestations of racism and white supremacy.

What is whiteness? What are the costs of whiteness - to our society, to Black and non-Black people of color, to white people? Why don’t we talk about whiteness more?  Should we? Where do we go from here?  Join BRJA as we reflect and discuss these questions and more, learning about whiteness and interrogating our own whiteness and how it shows up in ourselves, our institutions, and our society. This class is a mix of “content” and participant-driven exploration and discussion.

Progressive and liberal organizations and media offerings are filled with advice about how white people should show up in multi-racial spaces – when to speak up, when to be silent, when to sit back, or when to take action. These well-meaning messages can keep white people mired in confusion about how to show up as effective partners or leaders in the work. Join us for this workshop for white people as we explore these unexamined rules and how to move beyond them in order to more effectively show up in multi-racial spaces.
